The School of Dentistry, University of Benin, has celebrated its 50th anniversary of operation and its commitment to promoting academic excellence.
At the event held at the University of Benin Main Auditorium on Tuesday, academic dignitaries were present. Distinguished attendees included the Vice Chancellor of UNIBEN, Prof. Edoba Omoregie (SAN); the UBTH CMD, Prof. Mrs. Idia Ize-Iyamu; the Provost of the College of Medical Sciences, UNIBEN, Prof. Wilson Sadoh; former Dean of the School of Dentistry, Prof. Osawe Omoregie; Prof. J. E. Enabulele; the Dean of the School of Dentistry; as well as others.
The anniversary, tagged “Scientific Conference/Alumni Reunion & FICD Awardee,” saw the CMD describe the UNIBEN School of Dentistry as a centre of academic excellence.
Speaking at the event, Prof. Ize-Iyamu emphasized that UBTH remains committed to deepening its collaboration with the School of Dentistry in achieving academic excellence in training and research.
The event featured the presentation of Awards of Excellence to some dignitaries for their exceptional contributions to the Dental School.
Meanwhile, speaking with some students of the School of Dentistry, Favour gave kudos to the students and said that dentistry students need to be praised for the effort they have put into the success of their course. Favour, who refused to disclose her identity and pleaded that her voice not be recorded, further explained that students, generally, are to be appreciated, not only lecturers.
“We are good students today not by the effort of any lecturers or even any school officials. We only give praise to God and our parents who gave us the opportunity to come to school. Many lecturers are selfish, teaching for what they will get to eat and not for the passion and knowledge to impact. I study hard, do personal research, and fight the intimidation from some detractors who are supposed to be teaching but have stopped learning.
Although the University of Benin is trying to do its best for the students but is is no t enough at all, it needs to do more. It should find out what challenges the students are facing and help to solve them. That is the role of the school. Whatever you teach us is what we will give back to society. That is why society is getting to a worse stage. Schools need to make students happy for the future of society,” she concluded.
