The death penalty serves two primary purposes, permanently removing dangerous individuals from society and providing a sense of justice for victims and their families. It makes many people feel like there is justice for crimes. However, it has two major flaws.
One, someone or something decides what behaviors deserve punishment. Drowning your spouse in the bathtub or shooting anybody because of your state governor—I think we can agree on that. But what about the thugs this governor is using, or the governors who are still stealing public funds meant for state developments like Yaya Bello, and other top military officers who are sabotaging the economy, conniving with people to do illegal oil bunkering? These are people who we have trusted with power, like past and present EFCC chairmen, people in positions of poverty alleviation like Betta Edu, the Senate President, and members of the House of Representatives who steal constituency project money.
If we impose the death penalty on civil servants who assist politicians in stealing, there will be no need to go to the streets in protest. Let the government have the courage to do what failed Buhari could not do for us.
I have been using this word "retroactive." Let's not look at the law to the extent that people are destroying the country with selfish interests. Let's try every corrupt military man, soldier, police officer, and civil servant. The law has no respect for anybody; let's try the present ones looting us. They should be accountable and face a firing squad for those who have dipped their hands into the cooking jar.
Let's stop giving politicians police protection from criminals. Let's increase the salaries of the police, nurses, and civil servants. On this protest alone, we have lost trillions of naira, and if it continues, we will keep losing. Unions should be scrapped, especially the NLC. Joe Ajaero, the toothless bulldog—look at what we have all done collectively without the NLC; it has superseded what the NLC has done. Every motor park union should be stopped. Every association should be stopped. The government should be the association and give back to the people. We should make people an institution and make the institution a mark. I have been in Canada and have traveled to different countries since I left Nigeria. If we do all these things, Nigeria will work very well.
