The Academic Staff Union of Universities has suspended its eight month old strike conditionally.
Though the union is yet to make an official pronouncement, All Campus Show reports that the decision was taken at the end of the National Executive Council meeting which was held at the ASUU secretariat in Abuja.
The Court of Appeal had ordered ASUU to suspend the strike before its appeal of the ruling ordering lecturers to resume work can be heard.
Members of the union’s National Executive Committee, which encompasses chairmen of several state chapters and members of the national executive, attended the meeting at the ASUU National Secretariat in Abuja.
Speaking to Ojo Busuyi Jobus the Publisher of All Campus Show about the news, who has been in the Campus news business for a decade recounts how he pleaded with the Union not to embark on the strike as he predicted the outcome but he was ignored by them. In reacting to the announcement, Ojo expressed satisfaction and said Nigeria is a good country with good people but lacks good leaders. "ASUU is fighting for a good cause but the bad leaders we have are frustrating the educational system in Nigeria, we will still stand by ASUU come what may" he said. He further encouraged Nigerian students to summon courage to resume academic activities.
A Campus journalist commended ASUU for their tenacity in fighting for what is right. According to her, Asuu's request is long overdue to be granted. She also commended Nigerian students and Parents for their patience during the strike and hoped that this time, incessant occurrence of strike will end for good.
However, a recent study conducted showed that the strike has caused great damages as most Students ad even Lecturers are not happy to resume academic activities.
