A member of the House of Representatives, representing Jos South and Jos East constituencies, Dachung Musa Bagos, has advised the Federal Government to channel part of the newly returned Abacha loot to resolve the lingering ASUU strike.
This statement was made on Channels Television's Politics Today.
This comes shortly after the Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the federation, Abubakar Malami, confirmed that the loot, which is a total of $23,439,724 million, will be used by the federal government to promote three on-going projects, which include the Abuja-Kaduna road and the 2nd Niger bridge.
While lamenting over the failed effort by FG to settle the union, Musa identifies the strike as a pressing need and further suggests the federal government allocate a part of the returned loot to settle aggrieved lecturers and resolve the debt, which amounts to about N1.1 trillion.
He also highlighted the need for the right apropriation of funds in the country, especially when it concerns the citizens' needs.
"If I have to argue where those funds should be channelled to on the floor, I will say, ‘Why can’t you channel this fund to ASUU so that most of the youths that are at home will go back to school?’ But some of the areas we feel that the executive is channeling those funds are not the immediate needs of Nigerians."
"This is my third year in the National Assembly mbl. We have never discussed any of the recovered loot. We just sat down and we heard that the executive recovered loot and allotted the same to projects that they so desired.
"We believe that when we discuss these issues at the National Assembly, we appropriate those funds according to the needs of Nigeria, it is going to go a long way; not just the executive looking at it and allotting it (the fund) to what they feel it should be. The constitution has given us that right," he said.
