Edo Ministry of Women's Affairs introduces Fostering, states terms and conditions.

 


Edo State Government, Ministry of Women's Affairs have officially approved Fostering program for families in the State.


Speaking on this, Honourable Commissioner for Women's Affairs, Chief Olabisi Idaomi explained that "Fostering provides a safe haven for children who cannot live with their biological parents due to circumstances such as abuse, neglect, poverty, or loss. These children are placed in the care of a loving and responsible foster family, approved by the relevant authorities, such as the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development."



Why talking on the reason for fostering, Idaomi expressed that "Fostering offers vulnerable children a stable and secure environment, shielding them from harm. Foster families provide emotional support, love, and guidance, helping children overcome trauma and build resilience for better future."



In other words, according to Idaomi " Fostering ensures children continue their education, fostering personal growth and future opportunities. It also gives struggling parents a temporary reprieve, allowing them to address challenges while knowing their child is safe. By providing a nurturing environment, fostering empowers children to thrive, contributing to a stronger, more compassionate society."


Some essential dos and don'ts in fostering:


DOs

1. *Provide a safe and stable environment*: Ensure the child's physical, emotional, and psychological needs are met.

2. *Show love, care, and empathy*: Build trust and rapport with the child, acknowledging their feelings and experiences.

3. *Maintain open communication*: Encourage the child to express themselves, and listen actively to their concerns.

4. *Establish routines and boundaries*: Provide a sense of structure and consistency, helping the child feel secure.

5. *Support education and personal development*: Encourage learning, hobbies, and interests, promoting the child's overall growth.

6. *Respect the child's background and identity*: Acknowledge and celebrate the child's cultural heritage, family history, and individuality.

7. *Collaborate with social workers and professionals*: Work together with the child's social worker, therapists, and other professionals to ensure the child's needs are met.


Moreover, the Dos and Donts are lined below for any who is interested in taking up a child 


1. Don't make promises you can't keep: Be honest and transparent with the child, avoiding promises that may not be fulfilled.

2. Don't compare or criticize: Refrain from comparing the child to others or criticizing their behavior, appearance, or background.

3. Don't dismiss their feelings: Validate the child's emotions, even if you don't agree with their perspective.

4. Don't overindulge or spoil: Provide a nurturing environment, but avoid overindulging or spoiling the child, which can create unhealthy expectations.

5. Don't isolate the child: Encourage socialization and interaction with others, helping the child develop social skills and relationships.

6. Don't neglect boundaries: Establish and maintain healthy boundaries, ensuring the child's physical and emotional well-being.

7. Don't underestimate the child's needs: Recognize that every child is unique, and their needs may vary; be prepared to adapt and respond accordingly.


By following these dos and don'ts, foster caregivers can provide a supportive and nurturing environment, helping children thrive and reach their full potential.
