The peaceful Owo local government area of Ondo State has joined other communities suffering the heat of unprovoked killings.
This populous city in Ondo State Nigeria was formerly a city-state that served as a hub for political, commercial and cultural heritage with a blissful center of attraction known to host one of Africans largest palaces.
Sadly, on Sunday, residents, and worshippers were thrown aback following the alleged invasion of some unidentified men at Saint Francis Catholic Church, Owo Local Government Area, Ondo State.
This sect were said to have abruptly walked into the church premises towards the close of mass killing many church worshipers.
Our correspondent interviewed Mr Rahama Yusuf a BBC journalist based in Ondo State, who describes the peace and cordial relationship that has existed until the unfortunate incident.
“The business activities in Owo are peaceful and cordial. We are not known for religious discrimination. We are all one in terms of relationship and coexistence.” He said.
All Campus Show asked if there were any identified threats leading to the killings.
“This is coming fifteen days after the alleged abduction of an expertise working with one of the construction companies in Owo was abducted. The driver was shot and the military man attached to him was killed on the spot. Till now we haven’t heard anything."
Speaking to another youth his name withheld shows his displeasure.
"This killer entered the church in order to kill."
Furthermore he lamented on the reaction of the government. He says that the president's reaction to this incident would have been the way it should be if the incident is against the president or if it is just an ordinary word for word attack from a citizen.
Nigerians are helpless,
" The youths need to stand up on their feet and form a vigilante group in all the places governed by the Nigerian government. Because this government security is unreliable."
Following the incident, the State government openly condemned the act. But many are hoping that the incident is not swept under the carpet and that soon the perpetrated are soon identified and apprehended.
However, Mr. Rahama Yusuf is also calling on the youths to be more vigilant about their immediate environment and report any suspicious activities immediately to police officers or Amotekun, whose hotline you can reach at any time.
