University of Jos has lost eight students in an auto‑crash. The tragedy occurred on Thursday when a bus carrying student leaders collided with a trailer while speeding.
All Campus Show President, Plateau Chapter, Comrade Francis Barambu reported that the student leaders who had gone to attend a 100‑Level welcome party with two buses were split between male and female attendees.
The bus carrying the male students happened to race in order to overtake the bus carrying the girls and collided with a trailer coming from the opposite lane.
Seven of the eleven students died instantly, while another victim later died in the hospital; some others are currently receiving treatment at Plateau Teaching Hospital, while others are at Bingham Hospital.
The President of the National Association of Plateau State Students (NAPPS), Comrade Miapkop, as well as Comrade Angelo Gyang, President of the Social Science Students Association (SOSSA), one other Comrade Obed and others have been confirmed dead.
Sorrowfully, Francis lamented in his statement that death is part of life; it is impossible to eliminate it, but people should reduce avoidable risks.
“I can just say that universities should invest in safer systems, better student‑union activity planning, and stronger emergency support; we can significantly reduce the number of student tragedies and protect more young lives with such steps.”
“Some time last year, the university placed a ban on social activities outside campus because of similar issues like this.” He ended.
