The Rector of Abraham Adesanya Polytechnic, Ijebu-Igbo, Ogun State, Dr. Mobolaji Onasanya, has cautioned newly admitted students to steer clear of distractions that could derail their academic pursuits.
Speaking during the matriculation ceremony for the 2024/2025 academic session, where 3,175 students were formally admitted, Onasanya warned against cultism, examination malpractice, drug abuse, and other social vices that could jeopardise their future.
He emphasised that the matriculation ceremony was not merely a time for celebration and photographs but a solemn covenant in which students pledge to uphold the institution’s values and abide by its rules and regulations.
“The academic journey ahead will be both challenging and rewarding,” Onasanya stated. “Our polytechnic is known for its rigorous academic standards and practical approach to learning. You will be tested intellectually, emotionally, and physically. There will be long study hours, demanding projects, and practical fieldwork, but these challenges are designed to shape you into skilled professionals and responsible citizens,” the rector said.
He urged students to remain diligent, cultivate meaningful friendships, and seek guidance when needed rather than engage in destructive behaviours.
“Stay away from cultism, examination malpractice, and other vices that can truncate your journey. Instead, maintain a balanced lifestyle and make the most of the opportunities available to you,” he advised.
The rector assured students that the institution’s staff and management were always available to provide support and counselling whenever needed.
Onasanya also appealed to the Ogun State Government to increase funding for the polytechnic to accelerate its growth and enhance academic resources.
