The people of Ologbo-Nugu Community in Orhionmwon Local Government have taken to the streets to voice their frustrations over the SARO Oil Palm Farm, demanding that the farm relinquish 250 hectares of land for community farming or leave the area altogether. This protest comes in response to the farm's failure to employ local community members, opting instead to bring in workers from other states to fill key administrative roles.
Governor Godwin Obaseki's silence on this issue is deafening, as it highlights the state government's apparent disregard for the livelihoods and well-being of its citizens. Article 23 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights states that "everyone has the right to work, to free choice of employment, to just and favorable conditions of work and to protection against unemployment." By allowing SARO Oil Palm Farm to bypass local workers, the government is denying Ologbo-Nugu community members their basic human rights.
This situation is reminiscent of the African Charter on Human and Peoples' Rights, which asserts that "All peoples shall have the right to their economic, social and cultural development with due regard to their freedom and identity." The decision to import workers from outside the state undermines the cultural and social fabric of the Ologbo-Nugu community, while also perpetuating a cycle of unemployment and poverty.
The lack of local representation in SARO Oil Palm Farm's administration raises concerns about the farm's commitment to transparency and accountability. As a major employer in the region, the farm has a responsibility to engage with and support the local community. By failing to do so, SARO Oil Palm Farm risks exacerbating existing social and economic inequalities.
Ologbo-Nugu is a community located in Orhionmwon Local Government Area of Edo State, Nigeria. The community is situated in the southwestern part of Edo State, sharing boundaries with Uhunmwode Local Government Area to the north and Ovia North East Local Government Area to the south.
The Orhionmwon Local Government Area, where Ologbo-Nugu is located, was created in 1981 and is made up of several towns and villages, including Abudu, Odighi, Ogan, Ugo-Niyekorhionmwon, and Ologbo-Nugu, among others. The region is known for its rich cultural heritage and agricultural activities, with farming being a primary source of livelihood for many of its residents.
Ologbo-Nugu community has gained attention due to the ongoing dispute between local residents and SARO Oil Palm Farm over the alleged takeover of communal farmlands. The people of Ologbo-Nugu have been actively advocating for their rights and calling for a fair resolution to the land dispute.
