A Friendly Critique of Ooni of Ife's Stance on Hunger Protests: The Need for Empathy and Dialogue.

In a recent Arise interview, the Ooni of Ife expressed reservations about the ongoing hunger protests in Nigeria, citing concerns about the potential for violence and looting. While it is essential to acknowledge the Ooni's perspective and his role as a respected traditional leader, it is equally important to address the underlying issues that have led to these protests and the need for empathy in understanding the plight of Nigerians affected by food insecurity.

It is undeniable that any form of protest carries the risk of being hijacked by unscrupulous elements seeking to exploit the situation for personal gain. However, it is crucial to recognize that the overwhelming majority of protesters are peaceful and driven by genuine concerns about the state of governance and the lack of access to basic necessities, such as food.

By condemning the protests outright, the Ooni of Ife may inadvertently dismiss the legitimate grievances of those who are suffering from hunger and struggling to make ends meet. Instead of focusing solely on the potential risks associated with the protests, it would be more constructive to engage in a dialogue with the protesters and work together to find solutions to the underlying issues.

Moreover, the Ooni of Ife's position as a traditional leader grants him a unique opportunity to act as a mediator between the government and the people. By engaging with both parties, he can help facilitate a meaningful conversation that addresses the concerns of the protesters while also working towards a peaceful resolution.

While it is essential to be mindful of the potential risks associated with protests, it is equally crucial to acknowledge the plight of those who are driven to demonstrate due to hunger and other pressing issues. As a respected leader, the Ooni of Ife can play a pivotal role in fostering understanding and cooperation between the government and the people, helping to bridge the gap and ensure that the needs of Nigerians are addressed in a constructive and empathetic manner.
