The recent incident in Edo State, where a police officer lost his life amidst political celebrations, has left many questioning the priorities and values of those in power. Rather than providing first aid to the fallen officer, he was used as a political prop, paraded around while severely shot, instead of receiving the urgent care he so desperately needed. This blatant disregard for human life and the well-being of those who serve to protect us must not be overlooked or forgotten.
As the number one citizen of Edo State, Governor Godwin Obaseki has a responsibility to work closely with the Inspector General of Police to ensure that the perpetrators of this heinous act are brought to justice. Swift and decisive action is crucial in demonstrating that such negligence and callousness will not be tolerated in our society. The fallen officer's family, friends, and colleagues deserve to see accountability for this tragic loss of life.
Additionally, the decision of Philip Shaibu to rejoin the APC, without expressing any remorse or sympathy for the slain officer, raises questions about his commitment to the well-being of those who serve under his leadership. A public statement or message of condolence would have been a gesture of respect and acknowledgment of the sacrifice made by the officer.
The unfortunate events in Edo State also serve as a stark reminder that the practice of assigning policemen to politicians during campaign season must be reevaluated. In light of the widespread insecurity across the country, it is crucial that our law enforcement officers are utilized effectively and not simply deployed to serve the interests of politicians. By allowing politicians to experience the consequences of insecurity firsthand, we may see a more concerted effort to address these issues at the highest levels of government.
In conclusion, the tragedy in Edo State must serve as a catalyst for change. We must demand accountability and justice for the fallen officer, while also reexamining the practices that contributed to this terrible incident. Only by working together to uphold the value of human life and the principles of responsible leadership can we build a more secure and compassionate society for all Nigerians.
