In a shocking display of political intimidation, the campaign train of Olumide Akpata was met with violent opposition in Ward 2 Uhomora as thugs allegedly sent by the Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly attempted to disrupt the peaceful political gathering. This blatant attempt to stifle the democratic process and prevent political opponents from campaigning is a stark reminder of the challenges that continue to plague Nigeria's political landscape.
As a society that values the principles of democracy and the rule of law, we must strongly condemn these acts of political thuggery and call on the relevant authorities to take swift action against the perpetrators.
Furthermore, we urge the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to investigate this matter and ensure that all political parties are held accountable for their actions.
Section 94(1) of the Electoral Act 2022 stipulates that "A political campaign or slogan shall not be tainted with abusive language directly or indirectly likely to injure religious, ethnic, tribal or sectional feelings." Additionally, Section 92(3) states that "Places designated for religious worship, police stations and public offices shall not be used for political campaigns, rallies and processions; or to promote, propagate or attack political parties, candidates or their programmes or ideologies."
As we approach the upcoming elections, it is crucial that political leaders and their supporters adhere to the provisions of the Electoral Act and respect the rights of all citizens to participate in the democratic process without fear of intimidation or violence. We must send a strong message that thuggery and political malfeasance will not be tolerated in our democratic system.
In conclusion, we call on the Edo State House of Assembly Speaker, the councillor involved in this incident, and all political parties to recommit themselves to the principles of democracy, transparency, and the rule of law. Only by holding our leaders accountable and ensuring a fair and equitable electoral process can we build a stronger, more united Nigeria for generations to come.
