University of Benin (UNIBEN) is a public research University located in Benin City, Edo State, South South geopolitical zone of Nigeria.
It is among the universities owned by the Federal Government of Nigeria and was founded in 1970 with two campuses, fifteen Faculties, one College and three Institutes.
Speaking with All Campus Show today, the current Vice Chancellor of the institution, Professor Lilian Salami who is the second female Vice Chancellor of the institution and the most beautiful Vice Chancellor in the federation recognized and appreciated the privilege given to her as the Vice Chancellor of the University.
In a chit-chat with Prof. Salami over the recent incident between the students Union and the Lecturers at the Senior staff club. All Campus Show on behalf of the students is bothered over the suspension of the union and the other part of the Lecturers to resolute the conflict.
In her statement, Prof. Salami "First of all, the University is not a market business place but a centre for teaching and for learning, outside our major mandate, we are supposed to train students not only in their areas of chosen expertise but also we must help to note character.
"The situation that happened, whereby the student went into the senior staff club, and then the aftermath of all of that, immediately that happened the University set up a committee to investigate, because we do not apportion sanction, or sanction individual without thorough investigations.
"The committees submitted their findings, ASUU as a union also in charge of the welfare of it members wrote to management, the protocol is for management to look into the matter and take up to Senate to listen to the recommendation to agree or debate such sanctions. I want to make it clear that the students union was not banned, but suspended, although, the current level of investigation is not the end of the investigation, there are other steps, committees investigating the students, we are hoping that in a very short while, we will have all of these reports to take a final decision concerning the students that were involved."
Moreover, Prof. Salami led administration is worth celebrating, the achievements of the of Professor Lilian Salami led administration as the Vice Chancellor of the University of Benin, the administration indeed has turned the school environment to the garden of Eden inside-out just within four years, viewing about the newly built structures, beautification of the environment from the school gates to the lecture rooms, halls of residence as well as the staff offices, madam VC in her statement added that her administration has done a lots by organizing different programs, empowerment, the welfare of staff and students, although many dwell on the first impression which is the beautification and the new structures, we have touched all areas as seven pillars agenda. "We are starting the center for Artificial Intelligence (A.I) we are emphasizing more on technology. University of Benin wants to take a rightful position when it comes to technology, we would still want to continue with on infrastructures so that we can follow our deadline in October or November this year, we are also starting a center for leadership and management for those who wants to become administrators, where they can go to acquired skills that will better their administrative abilities, center for languages is also in our agenda, to enhance our local languages such as Hausa, Yoruba, Benin, Edo, Igbo and others. We are also going to start a career counseling center, to guiding and counseling students as to the professions which they want to go into like those who love music and other things. These aforementioned programs must hit ground as our achievements before this administration ends." VC said
However, UNIBEN VC as an exceptional mother figure hereby advised the students on the upcoming Governorship election, VC said irrespective of each person we would like to vote for, the first thing to look at in any candidate is the leadership standard, the candidate who will bring benefits to the masses.
Professor Lilian Salami also advised the young ones to shun any form of protest, aggression but focus on giving right to choosing a better leadership that can bring values to the citizens, leaders that are focused and friendly.
