Occupy Nigeria was a socio-political protest movement that began in Nigeria on Monday, 2 January 2012 in response to the fuel subsidy removal by the Federal Government of President Goodluck Jonathan on Sunday, 1 January 2012.[4] Protests took place across the country, including in the cities of Kano, Surulere, Ojota ( -part of metropolitan Lagos ), Abuja, Minna, and at the Nigerian High Commission in London. The protests have been characterised by civil disobedience, civil resistance, strike actions, demonstrations and online activism. The use of social media services such as Twitter and Facebook was a prominent feature of the protests. Post Occupy Nigeria and 2015, the Nigerian Government under the new president, Muhammadu Buhari have increased fuel prices from N87 to N145 with little resistant possibly due to the fact that Nigerians are beginning to realize that fuel subsidies are actually inimical to the country's growth rather than a mechanism towards helping the poor.(Wikipedia)
However, this has made many Nigerians to understand the factors which can develop the nation's economy. Subsidy removal was used by many presidential candidates as part of their manifestos during past general campaigns, this increased the understanding of the citizens to avoid protesting when the president elect announced the fuel subsidy removal unlike the understanding we had in 2012.
Reacting to this development, Chief Dr. Patrick Osagie Eholor otherwise known as Ultimate Equal, the Father of Nigerian Students-FONS and president of One Love Foundation has sent message to all Labour Party members in the Senate and the House of Representative, he said:
"All Labour Party members elected in house of representatives and senate must reject the 70B Naira planned for supplementary budget to support the “working conditions” of new lawmakers."
"Give my people before me is what true leadership is." this means that the leaders that were voted in are to serve their people first.
Eholor further said:
"To Emilokan, use the five hundred billion to repair our refinery that had created huge employment for the Nigerian Youths, give us good security and use the money to invest in what will create employment for our children, do not give us fish, teach us to kill fishes ourselves."
"My advice we don't need your ₦8,000 monthly payment, there is no indices to show the people suffering in Nigeria, this is a continuation of a failed president Buhari in COVID-19 and palliative saga."
"Nigerians are wiser now, that is why there is no trace of any protest as it happened in 2012 nationwide, Nigerians now know that truly, fuel subsidy must be removed, Nigerians also know that government cannot continue to buy us with peanuts, we have grown than that"
"Members of the Labour Party do not forget you rode on people's backs, a lot of Nigerians died just to elect you in that position, so many were injured to elect you in that position."
