Open letter to bank industry: You will soon end like SARS .

More recently, commercial banks have been the centre of attraction. There have been increasing complaints from bank customers and public institutions about banks' constant and continuous illegal charges.

Many decry that these charges are unnecessary and fraudulent, stating that unauthorized withdrawals have been made several times without redress from bodies supposed to scrutinize, prevent inflation in charges, and oversee these banks in Nigeria.

On Thursday, some of them expressed dissatisfaction with the banks' reluctance to remedy the problems, forcing angry customers to vent their frustrations.

According to David, banks are thieves. Thieves!! I'll transfer money to someone, and they'll charge me for the transfer and the person on the receiving end. That's fraud. The charges are unnecessary.

‘’I am not happy at all. It wasn't like this before. I don't mind protesting against it."

Similarly, another unhappy bank customer said, "Banks are deducting illegal charges from people's accounts for no reason. It is theft and injustice, and they should behave before they end up like SARS; nothing causes quarrels between friends like money.’’

"Trouble will land on them if they refuse to stop this act. They are reaping people, and it's crazy."

"When Nigerians got ready for SARS, they ended SARS brutality. So don't fault Nigerians if they decide to take matters into their own hands. I have been a victim of these unreasonable bank charges."

However, The CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele, said, "We wouldn't condone the fleecing of banking customers under any guise. If they are true, the CBN will ensure that these customers are properly refunded."

As a result, he urges offended public organizations and citizens to file further complaints with the Consumer Protection Department at cpd@cbn.gov.ng.
