HIGHER
INSTITUTION STUDENTS ABDUCTION; AN IMPOSSIBLE THING NOW POSSIBLE.
A fast
spreading phenomenon
In the
history of higher institutions globally, the campuses have always been compared
to barracks of the army, these barracks of the army are secluded places for the
military officers residence, offices and stores for war equipment, it is an
abomination or taboo for some certain things to happen in the barracks, ears
have not heard where barracks are being robbed by the robbers or where gangs come
to rape females or where abductors come to kidnap, the fear of the battalions
are the shield over the barracks.
However, the
campus of the students is seen as the same where different kind of young men
live, school and exercise their youthful strength, it is also an abomination to
be heard that students with or without Aluta struggles is being beaten, choked
or strangled by these impossible.
However, the
impossible things seem not possible are befalling the occupants of the campus
presently.
Around 1952
in the University of Ibadan, the western state of Nigeria is the first higher
institution in Nigeria, it was founded as a book club and later turned to a
college of learning. The then University students who had seen the weak
security in the future made them founded a confraternity group of students
(a.k.a Pirates) the aim of this group was to use it to secure the weaker ones
on campus which it was successful and managed in a good manner.
More so, students use it as a self-secured
medium against any form of intra and inter oppression or frustration, this
group was also used to project what is unpleasant to them on campus, either
from the management or fellow students.
Moreover,
the school management always fight the opinions of the students, hitting them
hard, punish the brains behind any objection against the management, these
students were molested by the authority, the result of any young person
rejected in so way may make him go behind to practice the acts he was punished
for if it not handled with love, just like the way we handle our children at
home. With this point, the students hide the activities, fight for right but in
the dark which no one is to be punished for any reason. Days over days and
years, these open group of students turn secret ones, they are brutal and
always get what they want.
Therefore, the records of this group have put
fear in the mind of anyone who thinks of abducting students, years also passed
when the school management starts sectioning the student’s bodies called students
union government, rusticating the executives, forcing gags in the mouth and
curbing their law-abiding activities. This also limit the power of the campus
students to exercise their youthful strength to guide and secure themselves
which result the how the dogs eat up the lion as the lion’s teeth have been
removed.
Recently,
the global history on students’ security on campus have been tarnished and
denied where the news of student’s abduction is flying in the air. In March 2020,
four lecturers and eleven students of University of Benin students were
abducted in Igarra, Akoko-Edo State but were later retrieved by some security
agents.
Some of Greenfield
University students in Kaduna State Nigeria have been abducted by the gun men
in April 2021, though some reports say the said students have also been
retrieved.
Recently, on
Wednesday 5th May, 2021, some Abia State University students were
abducted by the unknown gunmen as fondly say, the incident happened on
Okigwe-Uturu road between 7pm-8pm, our correspondent told us that the Vice
Chancellor of the school, Professor Ogbulu confirmed that some students escaped
the incident while some were just released yesterday Friday 7th,
2021.
The proposed
good news to be heard is that the nation must provide a maximum security for
all the students on campus, the insecurity across the country that have brought
fears to both old and young in the administration must be looked into.
An interview
with the national spokesman of NISAYA, Comrade Osemu Ogbidi who in an interview
with All Campus Show said the fight against insecurity and insurgency is as a
result of insincerity among the security operatives. The insincerity among these
proposed agents of peace is one of the reasons for rise in crime rate in the
school environment, the lackadaisical attitude of these security agents to this
matter of hooliganism is alarming and we as stakeholders will not sit back and
watch our educational system collapse and we will continue to fight and speak
against this insincere fight against insecurity.
