President Bola Tinubu has signed that the University of Maiduguri, Borno State will now bear the name Muhammadu Buhari University (MBU) in recognition of the late former president’s position in the country.
The announcement came during a special Federal Executive Council meeting held on Thursday at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, to honour Buhari, who died on Sunday at the age of 82.
“As we we now adopt the University of Maiduguri as the Muhammadu Buhari University,”- President Tinubu said
When he was delivering his tribute, Tinubu described Buhari as an exemplary leader known for his integrity, patriotism, and simplicity. He said the former president’s values would remain a reference point in Nigeria’s political history as well as the All progressive party.
Reflecting on their political partnership, Tinubu recounted how their alliance paved the way for the historic 2015 elections, which led to the first peaceful transfer of power between political parties in Nigeria.
The president expressed that "When he became president, he governed with dignity and restraint, and when he left office, he returned home without seeking to control events from the shadows. That is the measure of the man we celebrate today.”
President Tinubu also commended Buhari’s modesty after leaving power, noting that he lived in retirement with the same simplicity that defined his public service.
Tinubu thanked the inter-ministerial committee and Katsina State Governor, Dikko Radda, for arranging a state funeral within 48 hours, describing it as a great privilege to lead the final rites in Daura.
In his closing remarks, Tinubu offered prayers for the late leader: “The People’s General, the Farmer President, your work on earth is done. May Allah forgive your shortcomings and grant you Aljannah Firdaus. Your life will continue to inspire future generations.”
