University of Benin Honors Professor (Bishop) Osarhieme Benson Osadolor as an Icon.



Dr. Osarhieme Benson Osadolor is Professor of History and International Studies, University of Benin, Nigeria. He earned the Doctor of Philosophy degree in African History from the University of Hamburg, Germany in 2001 and has had a successful career in the University where he has taught in Nigeria, the United States and Europe. 


Prof. Osadolor began his career as Assistant lecturer at the University of Ibadan in 1988 and has won several laurels, prizes and grants.  He is a recipient of the United States Senior Fulbright Scholar Award (2008), the German Academic Exchange Scholar Award Deutscher Akademischer Austausch Dienst DAAD (1995), and a Laureate of the Governance Institute (1994) of the Council for the Development of Social Science Research in Africa (CODESRIA).



Professor Osadolor is an exceptional Nigerian Professor who has taught at Morgan State University, Baltimore, Maryland (2008/2009 academic session) where he was also engaged in the African Seminar at the Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore. He won two awards from the Council for International Exchange of Scholars, Washington D.C, as an Occasional Lecturer to Western Michigan University, Kalamazoo, Michigan, and the San Diego State University, San Diego California, USA for the Spring Semester 2009. He was also an Occasional Lecturer to Baltimore City Community College, Baltimore for the Spring Semester 2009.


Professor Osadolor is at the leading edge of knowledge generation and dissemination in African history, security studies and also serves as political analyst on national and international issues and events.


 His research focuses on African historiography, military history and security studies, with his publications demonstrating his intellectual output and contributions to knowledge. He has edited journals and books, and published scholarly works in Africa, the United States and Europe.


Prof. Osadolor's recent publications include State Management and Political Institutions in Nigeria before 1800 in: Toyin Falola and Matthew Heaton (eds.) The Oxford Handbook of Nigerian History. New York: Oxford University Press (2022); The Benin Sculptures: Colonial Injustice and the Restitution Question in: Thomas Sandkühler, Angelika Epple and Jürgen Zimmerer (eds..) Geschichtskultur Durch Restitution? Ein Kunst-Historikerstreit published in Köln (Germany) in 2021; and he co-edited with Lilian Imuetinyan Salami Fifty Years of  the University of Benin 1970-2020 published by Mindex Publishing Co. Ltd in Benin City in 2021.


The academic Icon, Prof. Osadolor fondly called OBO by the students has a wide range of administrative experiences and has held academic leadership positions and served as Acting Vice Chancellor, Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, Edo State, Nigeria from 11th May 2021 to 8th February 2022. He has also served relevant public bodies. He was appointed a member of the Technical Advisory Group of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), Abuja, 8th August 2019 and served as a resource person during the 2014 National Conference, Abuja and then, as a member of the Committee on the Final Report of 2014 National Conference Abuja. He is a member of professional associations.


However, on Saturday, 13th July 2024 at the Banquet Hall of the University of Benin, Benin City, Nigeria; Professor (Bishop) Osarhieme Benson Osadolor was honored with an Award for Good Representation as Acting Vice Chancellor of Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma from 2021-2022. The award was presented by the Vice Chancellor, Professor Mrs Lilian I. Salami  on behalf of Management and Staff of the University. The occasion was the grand reception in honour of former Uniben Vice Chancellors and Uniben Ambassadors. Earlier this year, on the 22nd of February 2024, Professor O. B. Osadolor was honored by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) with an Award of Excellence for Service to Humanity in recognition for upholding the rule of law, due process and defence of university autonomy. The award was presented to him by ASUU National President Professor Emmanuel Osodeke.
