The College of Medicine, University of Lagos, has advised its newly inducted nursing science students to make integrity, and trustworthiness their watchwords.
Speaking at the fourth nursing induction and award ceremony, the Provost of the College, Prof. David Oke, enjoined the 36 nursing inductees to be worthy ambassadors of CMUL.
“Therefore, I charge you all to be worthy ambassadors of the CMUL and make integrity your watchword. I urge you to be truthful in the discharge of your duties with other members of the medical team. Let me remind you to abide at all times by the Code of Ethics and Conduct of the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria and uphold the integrity of your profession. I am certain and quite confident that all of you will become great nurses of the highest distinction to the benefit of your alma mater and the Nation at large,” he said.
He reiterated that nurses should advocate for their patients and must balance their actions in the delivery of patient care.
“As we release you to the world. Do not forget to leave a legacy in your department which will be emulated by those coming behind you. Be rest assured that we will be praying for you and following your progress closely.”
The guest speaker, Dr Joel Aluko of the Department of Nursing Sciences, University of Ilorin, spoke on ‘The nurse: A voice to lead – invest in nursing and respect rights to secure global health.’
Aluko advised the inductees on the need to stay up-to-date with medical advances, saying that nurses were the backbone of the nation’s healthcare system.
