UNIBEN Gate Gunshot: The Failure of University's Public Relations in the Modern Era

The University of Benin management has dissociated itself from the clash that occurred at the University gate, University of Benin, Ugbowo Campus, on Sunday.

According to the memo signed by the Public Relations Officer of the institution, Benedicta Ehanire wrote, "UNIBEN DISSOCIATES INSTITUTION FROM VIOLENT CLASH OUTSIDE ITS CAMPUS."

In the denial tone of the memo, she said, "Preliminary reports indicate that the said incident is a fallout of cult activities outside the Campus and does not involve any University staff or student.

"Management of the University, while expressing regrets over the loss of life, urges members of the University community to remain vigilant and to go about their academic activities on campus peacefully."

At the spot, two University of Benin students, Mr. Alex Omogiate, a Political Science student, and Dorathy Ubah, a final-year student of Biochemistry, were shot dead at the entrance of the University.

Speaking on the issue, the founder of All Campus Show, Busuyi Ojo-Jobus, condemned the University of Benin for denying that the students were involved in the accident, saying it happened outside the campus.

Jobus said it is a pity that University management can still be covering what has evidence in this technology era, and asked why higher institutions are fond of running away from their responsibility. "If the students win a Grammy outside the campus, they will claim them as students, but as it is negative news, the University cannot be responsible for it. It is a shame. What are we teaching these students—that we should not take responsibility? That is why, as leaders in the society, they deny incidents with evidence. This is shameful. If I gather people at the same spot, playing music, dancing to music, will the University say it is outside Campus? Will they not send security to dissolve the gathering and stop the activity? University of Benin needs a better approach in relating with the public and apologize for deceiving the public," Ojo concluded.
