A non-governmental organisation, G-Empowerment Foundation has charged young broadcasters, communication students in the tertiary institutions and budding media practitioners on professionalism and ethical considerations in the discharge of their duties.
Philanthropist and founder of G-Empowerment Foundation, Mr Grant Offor gave the charge during the graduation ceremony of 27 youths sponsored at the ‘Apha Institute of Broadcasting and Communication’ in Port Harcourt.
According to Punch, Offor who was represented by the Secretary, G-Empowerment Management Committee Mr. Sam Chikweri, said with the current spread of misinformation and disinformation, broadcasters and media professionals must show utmost professionalism and credibility in their communication.
He emphasised that broadcasting remains the most powerful instrument in shaping public consciousness as it informs democracies, preserves culture, drives social change, influences markets, can build nations and equally destroy them.
“In this digital age, the line between information and misinformation is dangerously thin. The world does not just need broadcasters, it needs credible communicators. It needs ethical storytellers. It needs professionals who understand that truth is not negotiable.
“As you step into the global media space today, remember that your voice carries weight. Your tone influences perception. Your framing shapes understanding. Your silence can be as powerful as your speech,” he said.
The philanthropist said the decision to sponsor the 27 youths in broadcasting is to maximise their potential and give them the opportunity to contribute to the growth of society.
In his address, the Managing Director of the Institute, Chief Kalada Iyerego-Orubo, appreciated the sponsor for investing in the future of the graduates.
Iyerego-Orubo said the school’s mission is to act as a benchmark for quality broadcasting education in Nigeria and the African continent, through the provision of best practices in modern broadcasting and communications teaching and techniques to trainees.
He further said since its inception, the school has trained over 1,000 persons in Public Speaking, Broadcast Presentation, Production and Engineering, Sales and Marketing among other disciplines in the industry.
Speaking on behalf of the graduating students, Mr. John Peters, reflected on their practical sessions, stressing that they have prepared them for the real world ahead.
