Sorry OAU: OAU pro-chancellor Prof Oyeweso dies at 64 ‎

‎The Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Council of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Professor Abdulgafar Siyan Oyeweso, has died at the age of 64.

‎The news of his passing was announced on Tuesday via X (formerly Twitter) by Olalekan Badmus, Special Assistant to Governor Ademola Adeleke on Digital Media.

‎In his post, Badmus expressed sadness over the loss, writing, “Rest in power, Prof. Siyan Oyeweso. An illustrious son of Ede, Osun State, and Nigeria. What a sad loss!”

‎TVC also reported that the professor’s younger brother, Olawale Oyeweso, confirmed his death in a statement.

‎According to the statement, “He died on Tuesday, 2nd of December, 2025, at the age of 64, after a brief illness.”

‎He added that, “His remains will be buried in his country home, Ede, by 4 pm today after solat Ashri.”

‎Prof. Oyeweso, a renowned historian, educator and mentor, is survived by his wife, children, and extended family.

‎A highly respected academic, Oyeweso was a Professor of History and the serving Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife.

‎He was widely regarded as an authority on Nigerian history, politics, religion, and culture, with a distinguished career spanning several decades.
