NUC accredits medicine, law, others at Benson Idahosa varsity.

The National Universities Commission has granted full accreditation to four academic programmes at Benson Idahosa University, Benin City, in a move described by the institution as a major boost to its academic standing.

The accredited programmes include Law, Medicine, Anatomy, and Postgraduate Studies, according to BIU’s Vice Chancellor, Prof. John Okhuoya, who briefed journalists in Benin on Wednesday.

Okhuoya said the accreditation followed a comprehensive evaluation by the NUC, assessing the university’s infrastructure, teaching quality, curriculum standards, and research capacity.

“The NUC accreditation, which we received in a letter dated April 30, 2025, validates our alignment with global educational standards,” he stated. “It reaffirms our capacity to produce graduates who are professionally competent and ready to solve real-world problems.”

The letter conveying the accreditation was signed by the NUC Executive Secretary, Prof. Abdullahi Yusufu Ribadu.

The VC noted that the accreditation aligns with the university’s 2025 strategic plan, which emphasizes infrastructure development, faculty capacity building, and community-based research.

Looking ahead, BIU plans to launch new interdisciplinary programmes and deepen international collaborations to promote student exchange and innovation.

“This accreditation is not just a badge of honour,” Okhuoya said. “It’s a call to greater responsibility. We remain committed to raising leaders who will transform their societies with knowledge, integrity, and a heart for service.”
