Opinion: If Oga Wants Edo, Oga Must Get It-Dr. Eholor

The recent events unfolding in Edo State have brought to light a series of grave concerns regarding the democratic process and the well-being of its people. The promise made by Asiwauju to weaponize poverty and manipulate the citizens by inducing them with meager sums of 5,000 to 10,000 Naira, alongside his co-conspirators Alibaba and the 40 'thieves,' is a distressing revelation.

This orchestrated plan aimed at exploiting the less fortunate members of society for political gain is a direct attack on the principles of democracy and the sanctity of the electoral process. While it may be tempting to sympathize with Governor Obaseki amidst these troubling times, we must remember that he, too, played a role in setting the stage for the current state of affairs.

It is essential to acknowledge that his complacency and involvement in similar political gamesmanship have contributed to the dire situation faced by the Edo people today. Therefore, he must bear the consequences of his actions and, in the words of the aggrieved, "lick his wound."

Furthermore, the practice of selling and buying votes undermines the very foundation of our democracy and must be condemned in the strongest terms possible. Had Governor Obaseki refrained from aligning himself with the All Progressives Congress (APC), this toxic cycle of vote-selling and manipulation may not have been perpetuated.

In light of these pressing issues, we must also challenge the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and other law enforcement agencies to step up and take action.

The introduction of electronic voting, as a means to curb corruption and electoral malpractice, should be a top priority for these institutions.

It is imperative that we strive to restore faith in our democratic processes and ensure a fair, transparent election for the betterment of Edo State and its citizens. As we move forward, let us remember that the power of change lies within each one of us.

Only by holding our leaders accountable and working together towards a common goal can we safeguard our democratic institutions and secure a brighter future for Edo State.
