Setting the Record Straight on Political Manipulation and Disinformation
A video circulating online featuring Olumide Akpata, Femi Gbajamila, and former President Buhari has become the source of a damaging rumor that, if elected as Edo State governor, Olumide Akpata would merge the Labour Party with the All Progressives Congress (APC). This malicious claim is a blatant attempt to mislead the public and manipulate the political narrative in the run-up to the elections.
We categorically deny these unfounded allegations and condemn the APC propagandists who spread such disinformation. It is crucial to clarify that the images shown in the video were taken during Olumide Akpata's tenure as the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) President. He met with Gbajamila and former President Buhari to discuss the release of EndSars protesters – a meeting that had nothing to do with the Labour Party or any political alliances.
Using a misleading voiceover in the video to spread false information is a desperate and unethical tactic. We urge political actors to prioritize constructive dialogue and factual accuracy in their communications with the public. Attempting to sway voters with deceitful claims only undermines the democratic process and erodes trust in our political institutions.
It is vital that we remain vigilant against the spread of misinformation and hold those responsible accountable for their actions. As we approach the Edo governorship elections, let us focus on engaging in productive conversations about the issues that matter most to the people of Edo State and promoting a fair and transparent electoral process.
