The recent events in Edo State have left many citizens shocked and concerned about the state of our democracy. The alleged use of state vigilantes by Governor Godwin Obaseki to assault Deputy Governor Philip Shaibu during his celebration, as well as the disturbing reports of sporadic shooting on Airport Road in Benin City, are unacceptable and must be addressed with the utmost urgency.
We strongly condemn these acts of violence and intimidation, which have no place in a democratic society. Political disagreements should be resolved through peaceful dialogue and the rule of law, not through the use of force or aggression. Governor Obaseki's alleged involvement in this incident is deeply troubling and raises serious questions about his commitment to upholding democratic values.
The safety and security of the citizens of Edo State must be a top priority for the government. The reports of shooting in Benin City are particularly alarming, as they indicate a potential breakdown in law and order. It is crucial that the government takes immediate steps to restore stability and ensure that those responsible for these acts are held accountable.
We call on INEC to publicly address these incidents and disqualify the PDP candidate because by this they have breached the rule of Electoral Act.
Furthermore, we urge the federal government to closely monitor the situation in Edo State and take any necessary measures to protect the rights and freedoms of its citizens.
As Nigerians, we must stand together in defense of our democratic values and reject any attempt to undermine the rule of law. Only by working together can we build a more peaceful, prosperous, and united nation for all.
