Human Rights Lawyer, M.O. Idam has written to The Chief Executive Officer, Multi-Choice TV, the letter is to notify the pre-action against the terms and conditions of their product 'GOTV'.
In a letter sent to the Multi-Choice head office in Abuja, copied The Executive Vice Chairman, consumer protection council as well as National Broadcasting Commission, the letter which was received by the Multi-Choice on 21st September, 2023.
Idam bitterly expressed his dissatisfaction with the way the GOTV cheats their customers.
The heading of the letter "PRE-ACTION NOTICE;
CHEATING, EXPLOITATION AND UNFAIR TRADE PRACTICES, DEMAND TO METER DSTV, GOTV SUBSCRIPTION TO READ ONLY DURING VIEWING, WITH 30 DAYS."
In a press briefing with M.O. Idam, he said "I find it oppressive and exploitative for Multi-Choice to disconnect subscribers of DSTV and GOTV at the end of every subscription period, whether or not customers ever used their subscription.
"Totally unacceptable, is that they direct their designated agents to phone customers and demand them to renew their subscription or stand disconnected, even when same was never in use during the subscription period.
"More exploitative is the fact that DSTV, GOTV and indeed all the digital satellite providers in Nigeria, do not indicate how they arrive at their billing, nor do they roll over subscriptions that were not in use. Hence, subjecting users, to arbitrary and unfair charges.
"Based on the foregoing, I issued DSTV and GOTV and indeed all the digital satellite providers, thirty (30) days to regulate their television network to read only during viewing. Failure to so do, I shall immediately take an action against Multi-Choice TV and every other Television Network in Nigeria." he concluded.
