The three tiers of government have failed over the years, and the house of assembly which is supposed to make the law has become a lawbreaker.
I grew up in Benin city in the ’70s when we used to have a vibrant Ministry of Land and Survey, I remember when my dad bought a beetle and wanted to convert one of the stores in his house to a car park, he had to go and take a permit from the Ministry of Land and Survey authorizing him to do it, what a retrogression!.
We used to have sanitation workers who will check your pit toilets, we used to have health workers who checked restaurants to make sure the appropriate things were being done, you go to New- Benin market, for example, you go to Oba market, for example, you go to every market between the 18 local government of Edo state, the stories are the same, (Garbage Everywhere) the local government does not have the autonomous power because they were selected not elected, the judiciary doesn’t have their autonomous power, the house of assembly doesn’t have the power to oppose or propose any bill, Democracy in Africa especially in Nigeria is a huge joke.
I want to salute the genuine civil society members (CSO) to continue to push and do their best for their motherland, remember we are all going to die, history will judge us for what we do right and for what we do wrong, Godwin obaseki the governor of Edo state, is certainly going to do his best, but that might not be satisfactory to some of us, TIME will be the best judge because nothing lasts forever, let us have the courage to applaud those who are doing well in our society, let us also have the courage to speak truth to power.
I wish my brothers and sister a happy Sunday. Chief (DR) Patrick Osagie Eholor president of one love foundation otherwise known as Ultimate Equal.
